Business Tips and Advice Health and Wellbeing in the Workplace With an ageing UK population and workforce, implications are that in the not too distant future UK employers may be faced with a rise in sickness absence levels, as older people may be more vulnerable to ill health problems. As well as the UK workforce getting older, poor lifestyle habits and poor diets could also lead to increased ill health conditions such as coronary heart disease, asthma and diabetes, future rises in sickness absence rates may well have serious implications for some employers. However, whilst employers cannot insist their workers take up healthier lifestyles, taking an interest in employees' health and welfare and putting measures in place at work will greatly reduce the impact on sickness absence levels that companies may face in the future. Some measures that employers can put in place in the workplace include formulating company policies relating to health and safety, health and wellbeing and bullying and harassment. Introducing and promoting initiatives such as a work life balance philosophy, flexible working patterns and conditions, company activities and events which may help to reduce monotony and stress, offering healthy food options in work, and providing employees with subsidised memberships to local health or fitness centres where applicable. Also informing staff of health websites such as NHS Choices which provides an abundance of information relating to health and welfare. Read more » New Fit Note to replace Doctors Sick Note The UK Government has announced it proposal to replace the current doctor's sick note with a "Fit Note". The idea behind the new fit note is that it will outline what work an individual can do as opposed to what they cannot do, with the intentions to help people to stay in work, which is expected to save the UK economy over £365 million over the next 10 years. The changes of these notes are currently under consultation and they have already been trialled in some parts of the UK. However, the final outcome on this new note is not expected until next year. We will keep you informed of any developments with this new government initiative. |
