YOUNG BUTCHER'S BANGERS MAKE HIM NORTH WALES CHAMPION
28th May 2010
An apprentice butcher from Wrexham has mashed rivals with his bangers to become the young sausage making champion of North Wales.
Robert Jones, 24, who works for Jones Brothers Farm Shop on Mold Road, Wrexham, won the coveted award for his pork and tomato sausage on his debut in the under 25 competition at Venue Cymru, Llandudno.
Jones, who works with his father, Steve, brother Nathan, 19, uncles and cousins in the family business, said he was delighted to be crowned champion and hopes to go on to further competition success in the future.
His success follows gold and silver awards in the Wrexham sausage making contest last year with his pork and leek and Welsh Dragon bangers.
"I'm really chuffed about winning the young sausage maker of the year competition for North Wales. It adds to my job satisfaction," said Jones, who is working towards a Foundation Modern Apprenticeship in food manufacturing.
"I left school with only one qualification in landscape gardening because I wasn't interested in academic work. This award shows what can be achieved when you are interested in your work and put your mind to it.
"We make around 30 different sausages and sell a lot through the shop. Our customers tend to prefer the traditional recipes. Our meat is sourced within a 25-mile radius of the shop and we have a good reputation for selling quality."
Mr Jones' training programme is being delivered by Welshpool-based work based learning provider Cambrian Training Company on behalf of the Welsh Assembly Government.
He revealed that he had received valuable advice from British and Welsh champion sausage maker Stephen Vaughan, of S.A. Vaughan Butcher's in Penyffordd near Chester, before he began competing.

Keith Bonner, a training assessor with Cambrian Training Company, praised Mr Jones' commitment to his Foundation Modern Apprenticeship and said the award was well deserved.
"Robert is a very good young butcher who always has a smile on his face and is eager to learn," he added. "He is well on course to completing his Foundation Modern Apprenticeship and we are also training his brother, Nathan."
