Apprenticeships are helping create well trained staff who fully understand their roles in delivering healthcare to the community, the value of which was highlighted during the Covid-19 pandemic.

That’s why Bronglais General Hospital, Aberystwyth, part of Hywel Dda University Health Board, works closely with Cambrian Training Company to deliver a Foundation Apprenticeship in Cleaning and Support Services and an Apprenticeship in Cleaning and Support Supervision to 17 employees.

“Well trained staff equals a happy environment in the workplace and that benefits everybody, including the community,” says Steve James

The apprenticeship programme is considered important because it gives people, who may not have done that well at school, a chance to benchmark their skills by achieving a work-based qualification.

Arwyn Watkins, OBE, Cambrian Training Company’s managing director, praised Bronglais General Hospital’s hotel services department for its dedication and commitment to the apprenticeship programme and for the sterling work of staff during the pandemic.

The Apprenticeship Programme in Wales is funded by the Welsh Government with support from the European Social Fund.

“One can only imagine the challenges that hospital staff have faced over the past two years,” he said. “The work that they do is of critical importance and ensures that hospitals function.”
