Kepak’s Apprenticeship Programme: Building Skills, Careers and a Stronger Workforce in Wales

Kepak

Kepak, a family-owned global meat producer, has been investing in skills and people through its successful apprenticeship programme with Cambrian Training Company, running for over four years with 40 current apprentices. At its Merthyr Tydfil site – the largest meat processing plant and abattoir in Wales with more than 850 employees – apprenticeships are helping to close skills gaps, build future leaders, and strengthen workforce retention.

With apprenticeships spanning Levels 2 to 5 in areas such as Meat and Poultry Industry Skills, Food Manufacturing and Management, the programme has reduced staff turnover by 15%, improved audit outcomes, and enhanced Kepak’s reputation as a forward-looking employer. Apprentices gain both technical and soft skills, with many progressing into supervisory and management roles.

Kepak’s innovative use of digital learning tools, real-time feedback apps and structured development pathways ensures apprentices are equipped for long-term growth within the company. Staff who demonstrate new skills and higher performance are rewarded with pay increases, reinforcing a culture of development and recognition.

The company’s commitment was recognised when Kepak received the Cambrian Training Company’s Outstanding Contribution to Apprenticeships Award, reflecting its impact on the local community, innovation, and sustainable legacy.

“Skills development is fundamental to the success of our business,” says Chris Gilmour, Kepak’s HR Manager Retail. “Developing our own talent is at the core of Kepak’s learning and development strategy.”

With Cambrian Training as a long-term partner, Kepak is setting a blueprint for skills development, succession planning, and management training across its 15 sites in the UK and Ireland, ensuring a stronger workforce and a sustainable future.
