From GCSEs to a Career in Butchery – Dyfan’s Apprenticeship Success Story

Background: The Challenge

When Dyfan James completed his GCSEs at Ysgol Bro Preseli, he faced the same decision as many young people: choosing the next step in his education and career journey.

Rather than following a traditional academic route, Dyfan wanted a pathway that would allow him to build practical skills, gain real workplace experience and work towards a long-term career in an industry he was passionate about. Having already secured a Saturday job at Ken Davies Butchers in Crymych at the age of 15, he had developed a genuine interest in the butchery trade and recognised the opportunities available within the sector.

The challenge was finding a route that would enable him to develop professionally and gain an industry-recognised qualification.

The Solution

Dyfan chose to enroll in a Foundation Apprenticeship in Butchery and Meat Processing with Cambrian Training Company whilst continuing his employment with Ken Davies Butchers in Crymych, Prembrokeshire.

The work-based apprenticeship provides a blend of workplace learning and industry-recognised qualifications, enabling Dyfan to earn while he learns and develop the specialist skills required within the meat processing sector.

Through his apprenticeship programme, Dyfan is gaining hands-on experience across all aspects of the trade while working alongside experienced professionals who are helping him build his knowledge and confidence and building the specialist skills employers value.

Alongside his technical development, Dyfan has also embraced opportunities to support and promote the Welsh language. As a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol Apprenticeship Ambassador for the Welsh Language, he actively encourages the use of Cymraeg within the workplace, at events and through digital campaigns, helping to inspire other apprentices to use Welsh in their everyday working lives.

For Dyfan, the Welsh language is an important part of his identity and something he is passionate about protecting and promoting for future generations.

“Without using the language, Welsh is going to die out and we don’t want to see that. It’s the most important language to me and I can’t imagine Wales without people speaking Welsh.”

His message highlights the important role apprentices can play in maintaining and strengthening the use of Welsh across workplaces and communities throughout Wales.
