5 top tips on reducing Food Waste

Did you know food waste is a major contributor to climate change?

When we waste food, we also waste the resources that went into growing, transporting, packaging and cooking it.

According to Love Food Hate Waste, in the UK alone we waste 4.5 tonnes of edible food each year!

As its Zero Waste Week, we want to take this opportunity to give you a few tips on how you could reduce your very own food waste!

  1. Make a shopping list

From planning your meals, to taking a picture of your fridge so you know what you have already got, making a list is a great way to stop you from buying food you do not need.

If you don’t have time to create a meticulous meal plan, buy ingredients that can be used for a range of meals e.g. mince. This gives you the flexibility to change things up, use all your fresh food before it goes off… and even reduce packaging waste!

  1. Take away the guesswork with a portion planner

A portion planner can help you to buy and serve the correct portions to your family – saving you money, time and those extra few bites of waste!

  1. Check the use-by dates

Make sure you check that you are able to use the food before it expires – simple!

You could even store your foods in order of use-by dates in the fridge to remind you what needs using up first.

  1. Press pause with your freezer

You can freeze your food right up to the use-by date, and then defrost when you need to. From milk to raw chicken, pretty much anything can be frozen!

  1. Make the most of your leftovers
