Head of IT and MI Analyst achieves Degree Apprenticeship with Honours

Alex Hogg’s Apprenticeship Journey

At Cambrian Training Company, we are delighted to celebrate the outstanding achievement of Alex Hogg, who has completed a Degree Apprenticeship with the Open University, graduating with First Class Honours in Applied Software Engineering.

Alex, 43, has been a valued member of our team in Welshpool for 17 years. His journey embodies the very best of work-based learning – combining personal dedication, professional growth and the transformative impact of investing in people.

Balancing his responsibilities in IT management and data analysis with four years of weekly academic study, Alex has demonstrated remarkable commitment to lifelong learning. His success reflects both his determination and our ethos of nurturing talent from within.

Throughout his studies, Alex applied his learning directly to our business, developing bespoke software applications that have streamlined internal processes – from expenses to travel – saving staff time and improving efficiency. His role is central to our operational success, ensuring accurate data analysis and reporting to meet our £8 million apprenticeship contract with the Welsh Government.

Reflecting on his achievement, Alex said:

“I didn’t think I was that academic and was surprised to get first-class honours. As I’m quite well organised, it was a matter of meeting the deadlines and criteria. The degree benchmarks my skills and gives me a real confidence boost.”

His role is central to the company’s operational success, ensuring accurate data analysis and reporting to meet an £8 million apprenticeship contract with the Welsh Government.

“When I started, the contract was under £1 million,” he reflected. “Now, we rely on real-time data to guide investment decisions and deliver high-quality training and mentoring to individuals, businesses, and communities.”

Our Managing Director, Faith O’Brien, said:

“We couldn’t be prouder of Alex and all he’s achieved. His commitment, curiosity and quiet determination are a brilliant example of what work-based learning is all about. At Cambrian Training, we believe in growing our own – investing in people, nurturing talent and creating space for lifelong learning. Alex’s journey demonstrates the profound impact of apprenticeships, unlocking potential, building confidence, and delivering real, lasting benefits across the business. It’s been a win-win for Alex, the team and the future of our organisation.”
