From Apprentice to Director – A Lifelong Journey with Cambrian Training Company

Elen Reees

In 1997, I walked through the doors of Cambrian Training Company as a Customer Service Apprentice – one of just a few learners aiming to complete the full framework. Back then, apprenticeships weren’t as widely understood or celebrated as they are today. But for me, they were the spark that ignited a lifelong passion for learning, growth, and giving back.

Fast forward to today, and I’m proud to serve as the Director of Finance & Support Services – and even prouder to be Cambrian Training Company’s longest-serving member of staff.

Learning while working: The power of apprenticeships

My journey is proof that apprenticeships aren’t just a stepping stone – they’re a launchpad. While working full-time, I was given the opportunity to study for a Higher National Certificate (HNC) and later a Higher National Diploma (HND), both at Apprenticeship Levels 4 and 5 in Business Administration. It meant long evenings – 1 pm to 9 pm once a week – but my employer supported me every step of the way. Assignments were based on real projects within the company, making the learning practical, relevant, and immediately impactful.

That support didn’t just help me pass exams – it helped me grow into a leader.

Growing together: Cambrian’s evolution

In 1998, a new Operations Director brought fresh energy and vision to the company. With new contracts secured – including a landmark partnership with Stena Line – Cambrian Training Company expanded beyond Mid Wales, delivering work-based learning across Wales and the UK. It was a whirlwind of new systems, new offices, and new responsibilities. I learned fast, and I grew even faster.

As Cambrian evolved, so did I. From our early days at The Old Coach Chambers in Welshpool to our current home at Ty Cambrian in Offas Dyke Business Park, I’ve had the privilege of helping shape each chapter of our story.

Building futures, one apprentice at a time

Today, my role is all about giving back. I mentor learners, support apprentices, and help shape the future of training in Wales and beyond. Every day is different – but every day is driven by the same passion I had when I first joined Cambrian Training Company.

Apprenticeships gave me a future. Now, I get to help others build theirs.

The team behind the mission

No day is complete without checking in with my incredible team that keeps Cambrian thriving:

  • Alex Hogg and Haydn Lloyd in IT – fresh off achieving Cyber Essentials Plus.
  • Ceri Morgan-Jones and Stephen Bound in HR – always keeping us grounded.
  • Jack Brets in Finance – keeping the numbers sharp.
  • Catherine Isaac at The Trewythen – holding down the fort with grace and grit.

Each person plays a vital role in our mission to deliver excellence in work-based learning.
