From Apprentice to Award-Winning Business Owner

When Ben Roberts began his Level 2 Butchery Apprenticeship with Cambrian Training around 14 years ago, he was looking to build on the practical experience he had already gained in the trade. What followed was a learning journey that would equip him with the skills, confidence and business knowledge to transform his career.

After completing both Level 2 and Level 3 apprenticeships in butchery, Ben continued to develop his expertise through Food Management and Business Management apprenticeships. These qualifications gave him not only a mastery of his craft but also a deep understanding of leadership, people management and business operations.

Today, Ben is the owner of Astley & Stratton Ltd in Farndon, near Chester, having taken the leap to launch his own business in January 2024. He credits his apprenticeship journey with giving him the knowledge, confidence and foundations needed to make that ambition a reality.

A Career Built on Skills and Determination

Ben’s success extends far beyond business ownership. His apprenticeship journey has given him the opportunity to compete for his country and many other achievements:

• Member of the Craft Butchery Team Wales that achieved Bronze medals in the World Butchers’ Challenge in the USA;
• Competing at WorldSkills UK, finishing third nationally;
• Skills Excellence in Wales Ambassador;
• Apprentice of the Year at both the Wales Food and Drink Awards and Cambrian Training Awards.

Having progressed from apprentice butcher to being appointed to manage M.E. Evans Butchers and then establishing his own company, Ben is now focused on giving others the same opportunities he received, with plans to employ and develop future apprentices.

Through vocational education, apprenticeships and continuous learning, Ben has built an award-winning career, represented Wales on the international stage and become the owner of his own thriving business.
